The Church of Santa María dos Anjos (Our Lady of the Angels) is the parish church of Ponte de Lima and has been a monument of public interest since 2013. It has a bell tower and a Neo-Gothic rose window from 1932 inspired by the one at São Francisco in Porto.
On the Camino
Ponte de Lima is the end of the Central Route stage from Barcelos. The church is in the old town, a few steps from the bridge over the Lima.
Its history
It replaces a small Romanesque church with a single nave. At the Cortes of Évora in 1444 the town’s representatives complained that the old church was too small for everyone. The new church was paid for with help from John I and the regent Dom Pedro and was finished around 1450. From 1567 the main chapel was rebuilt and the interior divided into three naves. The great altarpiece of Our Lady of Sorrows dates from 1729.
