The mother church of Matosinhos and sanctuary of the Senhor de Matosinhos, the centre of one of the most popular pilgrimages in northern Portugal. It has been a property of public interest since 1982.
On the Camino
The Coastal Route passes through Matosinhos at km 11.3 of the Porto – Labruge stage. The church lies inland, a short detour from the seafront promenade.
What to see
The church already existed in the 16th century, but in 1743 a complete renovation began to plans by Nicolau Nasoni, paid for with offerings from emigrants in Brazil and from seafarers. The façade has three doorways and two towers. On the gilded main altarpiece is the image of the Bom Jesus, from the 12th or 13th century, one of the oldest crucifixes in the country. The choir organ dates from 1685.
