A church of Romanesque origin in the parish of Rubiães, in the municipality of Paredes de Coura. It has been a national monument since 1913 and is built of stone masonry, beside National Road 201.
On the Camino
Rubiães is the end of the stage from Ponte de Lima, after the climb and descent of the Portela Grande, the most demanding pass on the Portuguese Camino Central Route. The church is in the village itself, right by the route, and is worth a stop at the end of the day.
Its history
The oldest record of the church dates from 1257, when it was built or rebuilt. In the 16th century the nave was added and the chevet was moved to the east. The bell tower dates from the 17th century. For that reason the church combines Romanesque sobriety with additions from later periods.
